Residence Permit - Post Arrival

Officially Recognizes You as a Resident of China for a Certain Purpose.

Once you have arrived in China, you will have 48-hours to register your presence at the local PSB.  Your host institution should do this.  Remind them if they don't as some places in China may impose a fine on you if you are caught in town without having registered.

The process for obtaining a residence permit can take between 10-45 days and your sponsor will need your original passport at some point so make copies and keep them safe.  Your sponsor should not have your passport for more than two days once it is required.

SAFEA - FOREIGN EXPERT CERTIFICATE

Your sponsor should make application for your Foreign Expert Certificate, a red book that illustrates you are a foreign expert working in a certain type of field of education, science or technology.    This book is also useful for converting Chinese money into US dollars at local banks.

SUPPLEMENTAL MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Once in China, you will need to provide a copy of your Physical Examination Form that your doctor completed in order to satisfy the medical requirement.  If you don't have one, don't worry.  Some provinces perform supplemental health checks after you arrive which may involve drawing blood and taking x-rays.  The medical examination usually takes place at the provincial capital of the province where you are working and may take up to an entire day to complete.

PBS CERTIFIES IT

Once your Chinese doctors have certified you with a clean bill of health your sponsor then needs to bring these certified documents to the local public security bureau for inspection.  They will then approve you for residence in China.  Your original passport will be required at this point.  The PBS will affix the residence permit in your passport on an available visa page.   This process should take no longer than one or two days.

Special Notices

You cannot obtain a residence permit outside of China. The application for residence must take place within China within 30-days of your arrival.   At this time, you also cannot renew a residence permit outside of China at any Chinese consulate.  It does not matter if you own property or a business,   residence formalities must take place in China and that's that.

ENDING EMPLOYMENT

When your employment is terminated or you successfully complete your contract you have 30-days to exit China, renew employment or find new employment.  Changing employers requires applying for a new residence permit from your new sponsor.  In order to do this smoothly, you should obtain a letter from your former employer that illustrates that your previous contract was successfully completed and you are released from any further obligation.  This letter should ideally be written in both Chinese and English and have the official stamp of your previous employer.

REGISTER WITH YOUR EMBASSY

If you haven't already done so, now would be a good time to register your presence in China with your embassy.  Registering with the embassy has special benefits and can help you if you should encounter financial or legal difficulty, medical emergencies or in cases of emergency notification from family abroad.
